Defensive Tackle · Tennessee Titans

Jeffery Simmons

No. 98 · 8th season

A hundred million reasons the Titans just said we're building around you

Some contracts are transactions. This one is a statement.

Jeffery Simmons plays defensive tackle — the position that does the hard, unglamorous work in the middle of the line, the kind that shows up in the game but rarely shows up in the headlines. He is the player other players have to game-plan around, the one who makes everything easier for his teammates and harder for everybody else.

The Tennessee Titans and Simmons have agreed on a three-year extension worth $35.3 million a year, with $100 million guaranteed. That is a franchise-level number for a position that does not usually see franchise-level money.

A hundred million guaranteed does not come with a handshake and a hope. It means the organization looked at its future and put Simmons at the center of it. For a player who does the work that most fans never fully see, the number says plenty.

Now it is official. Everyone who has been watching already knew.
