Denzel Ward keeps getting underranked, and Cleveland might be why
There is a version of Denzel Ward's career that plays out in a bigger market and everyone knows his name by now. Instead, he has spent years as one of the better cornerbacks in the league, doing it quietly in Cleveland, and watching the recognition go elsewhere.
Ward has lined up as the Cleveland Browns' top cornerback since they drafted him in the first round back in 2018. He has made Pro Bowls. He has shut down some of the best receivers in the game. The work has been real and consistent.
His latest ESPN ranking dropped anyway. It is the kind of thing that would spark a debate anywhere else; in Cleveland, it barely registers outside the people who already know.
The argument is simple: if Ward played for a team that was on national television every other week, this conversation looks different. Rankings are not just about what happens on the field — they are about who is watching when it does. Ward keeps doing his job. The scoreboard of credit just does not seem to be keeping up.
At some point, a player either gets the recognition or they don't. Ward is running out of things left to prove — other than which city he's proving them in.
