George Pickens

No. 3 · 5th season

Every other player found a way out. Pickens is the one who didn't.

Going into 2026, George Pickens will be the only player in the entire league still playing on a franchise tag. Every other player who got that designation either signed a long-term deal or moved on. Pickens is standing alone in a different kind of spotlight.

The franchise tag is a one-year hold — it pays a player based on the average of the top salaries at their position, but it is not the guaranteed, long-term security most players want. It is a team saying "we want you, just not enough to commit." For a wide receiver with Pickens's ability, that gap between perceived value and official status is not a small thing.

There are two ways to read being the last one standing here. Either something in the negotiation never quite closed, or both sides have decided that this one year is what it is — and the bigger conversation happens later. What it is not is settled.

Pickens will be out there every week playing for a contract, in front of a city that will be watching. That is a particular kind of pressure. The number on his tag says plenty; the number on a future contract will say more.
