Four years, $96 million, and a place Matthew Bergeron isn't leaving

Some players build something at a place and then get moved along before anyone notices. Bergeron isn't one of them.

The Atlanta Falcons took Bergeron 38th overall in 2023 — a second-round pick, which comes with a specific kind of pressure: high enough to mean something, low enough that you have to prove the investment wasn't misplaced. He lined up at guard and kept lining up, and two years later the organization answered with a four-year, $96 million extension. Sixty million of that is guaranteed.

That number is a statement. Offensive linemen don't get that kind of money for potential — they get it for protecting things the team can't afford to lose. Whatever Bergeron has been doing in front of the offense in Atlanta, the front office decided it was worth locking in for the long term.
