Some positions get the glory. The center is not one of them — and that's exactly what makes this kind of money mean something.

Joe Tippmann lines up at center for the New York Jets, the player who snaps the ball, calls protections, and absorbs punishment without a highlight reel to show for it. It is quiet, load-bearing work. The Jets apparently decided they'd rather pay for it than find out what it looks like without him.

The two sides agreed on a four-year extension worth $66.4 million, with nearly $35 million of that guaranteed. For a position that rarely sees this kind of commitment, the number says plenty.

For Tippmann, this is the franchise telling him plainly: you are who we are building around up front. That kind of security is rare for any player, and rarer still for someone whose job description starts and ends with making other people look good.
