Mahomes has a date in mind, and he's not moving it
A torn ACL ends most people's plans. Mahomes is making new ones.
For anyone who has watched him over the last several years, Patrick Mahomes has built something unusual in Kansas City — a run defined less by individual brilliance and more by the feeling that the game is never quite over while he's in it. Losing that presence, even temporarily, is not a small thing.
The injury came in December. A torn anterior cruciate ligament — one of the most significant a player can suffer, typically requiring months of careful rehabilitation before a return to full contact. Mahomes went through that news and came out the other side with a target: Week 1 of the 2026 season. He has been direct about it. He does not want to miss more time than he already has.
That kind of certainty about a recovery timeline is a statement in itself. ACL timelines are unpredictable, and cautious is usually the word around them. Mahomes is not using that word.
What he's actually chasing — whether he can hold that timeline, and whether he arrives at Week 1 as himself — is the question the next several months will answer.
