Nix says the scramble is still there — repaired ankle and all
There is a version of a player who comes back from surgery playing careful, protecting what was fixed, quietly rationing the risk. Bo Nix is not describing that player.
Nix had surgery on his right ankle, and the questions that follow any quarterback through a recovery like that are reasonable ones: will they still trust their legs when the pocket collapses? Will the instinct to run still be there? On Saturday, Nix answered both without much deliberation. He will scramble. He does not plan to think twice about it. When he is moving, he said, is when he feels most like himself.
That is a meaningful thing to say out loud before a season starts. It is a statement about identity as much as health — the kind of quarterback Nix believes he is, and plans to keep being.
The Denver Broncos' offense tends to be a different thing when Nix extends plays with his feet. Defenses have to account for a second threat instead of one. Nix knows that. What he said Saturday is that the ankle is not going to be the thing that changes the equation.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said Saturday he will not hesitate to scramble on his surgically repaired right ankle this season, and that when he's on the move is “when I feel at my best.” Story via @Jeff_Legwold: https://t.co/luFysUsxeh
