Offensive Lineman · Kansas City Chiefs

Kahlil Benson

Rookie

Nobody drafted Kahlil Benson. Now he's in line to protect Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs didn't pick Kahlil Benson. No team did. He came in without a draft slot, without a signing bonus story, without any of the usual runway an offensive lineman gets before a team hands him a real job.

Now he's competing for the starting spot at right tackle — the position responsible for keeping the quarterback's blind side covered on one side of the line. And the quarterback he'd be protecting is Patrick Mahomes, who is coming back from a torn ACL and has every reason to care about who stands next to him.

For an undrafted player, making a starting offensive line in the NFL is not a likely outcome. Most don't get this far. The fact that Benson is in the conversation at all says something about what the coaches have seen in him.

What happens next is genuinely open. He hasn't won the job. He's just earned the chance to win it — which is the whole thing, for a player who wasn't supposed to be here.
