He is one of the most recognizable names in the secondary in the last decade — a cornerback who has made a career out of being exactly where he needs to be. So when Jalen Ramsey opened Pittsburgh Steelers training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, the absence was hard to miss.

The knee didn't need surgery, which matters. But it did mean Ramsey wasn't out there with his new teammates at the start of camp, working through the kind of early reps that help a player feel at home in a new system. General manager Omar Khan said the team is being deliberate about bringing him along.

For a player still establishing himself in Pittsburgh, every practice missed is time that can't be bought back. The good news is the road back doesn't involve a scalpel. The question is just how long the careful approach takes.
