Being a free agent means waiting. You know your phone can ring — you just don't know when, or if.

Jenkins is a safety, the kind of player whose job is to read the field and be in the right place before anyone else knows where that is. He's been around long enough to know how quickly a roster spot can disappear and how much it means when one comes back.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Jenkins to a one-year deal and added him to their 90-man roster — the large pre-season group teams use to find out who fits and who doesn't before the season starts for real.

A one-year contract at this stage is essentially an audition with a paycheck. For Jenkins, it's a chance to show a new organization what he's worth — and to answer the question that follows every player who goes looking for work: do you still belong here?

The answer isn't written yet. But at least the door is open.
