Wide Receiver · Tennessee Titans

Calvin Ridley

No. 0 · 9th season

Ridley took less money. He's not going anywhere.

There's a version of this story where a wide receiver takes a pay cut and quietly disappears into depth-chart limbo. Calvin Ridley doesn't seem to be writing that version.

Ridley has had a career that asked a lot of him — and asked him to wait, more than once. He came up as one of the more electric receivers in the game, then watched years slip by in ways that had nothing to do with football. Getting back on the field has never been a given for him.

This offseason, he restructured his contract and stayed with the Tennessee Titans. Took less. Stayed anyway. And by his own account, he still believes the speed is there — that the player people remember is still the one who shows up on Sundays.

A pay cut can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it means a team is moving on and just being polite about it. Sometimes it means a player is betting on himself when nobody else will. Ridley's version sounds like the latter.

The Titans are building something. Where Ridley fits in that picture — and whether this season is a reclamation or a farewell — is the question he just made more interesting by staying.
