Jaylen Waddle

No. 17 · 6th season

Sean Payton says Waddle is picking it up fast — and Payton doesn't say that lightly

New city, new playbook, new everything. That's the situation Jaylen Waddle walked into when he joined the Denver Broncos, and the early read from the top of the organization is that he's handling it well.

Waddle arrived as one of the more notable additions to a Broncos receiving corps that Sean Payton has been building around Bo Nix.

Payton is not a coach who hands out praise to fill air time. So when he's talking about how quickly Waddle is absorbing the offense, that means something. A wide receiver learning a new system is one of the harder asks in football — the timing, the reads, the language of a whole new scheme — and Waddle is apparently making it look less hard than it usually is.

The season is a long way off. But the guy whose job it is to know noticed first.

“He’s someone who picks things up real quick. He had a real good day. You can just feel his instincts, his quickness and his ability to really not only run fast, but stop fast. So he’s doing well.”
