Offensive Lineman · Green Bay Packers

Zach Tom

No. 50 · 5th season

The Packers' right tackle just told the world exactly where he comes from

A name change is paperwork. It's also a declaration.

Zach Tom plays right tackle for the Green Bay Packers — the person in front of the quarterback, the last thing between the pocket and chaos. He has quietly been one of the better young offensive linemen in the league. But starting now, he goes by Zach Bako-Bewele, and the new name carries a whole family history in two words.

Bako comes from his father's mother's side. Bewele from his father's father's. Two lineages, stitched together and worn on the back of a jersey. He didn't pick a side. He carried both.

That kind of choice doesn't happen on a whim. It's the result of someone sitting with who they are and deciding to make it visible — to say, out loud, this is where I come from and I want you to know it.

Whatever number is on his back, the name above it now does the real talking.
