The Texans just told C.J. Stroud they're not looking elsewhere

Some conversations end with a handshake. This one ended with a commitment.

Stroud arrived in Houston as a second-overall pick and, almost immediately, made the Texans look prescient. In two seasons he turned a franchise that had been rebuilding for years into one of the more watchable teams in the league — a young quarterback who played with a calm that older players spend careers chasing.

Now the Texans have picked up the fifth-year option on his contract, keeping him locked in through at least 2026. General manager Nick Caserio called the conversations with Stroud productive — which is front-office language for: nobody slammed a door.

For a quarterback, the fifth-year option is a team saying it sees enough to keep building. It is also a starting line, not a finish line — the bigger contract, if it comes, comes next. What the Texans have done here is remove the uncertainty from the near term and put both sides in the same room for what happens after.

Stroud is still 23. Houston just made sure he is their 23-year-old.
