There is a version of a young quarterback who plays scared, and a version who plays like he has nothing to lose. The New York Giants are trying to find the third version.

Dart came to New York as someone the organization believes in enough to build around. What that belief looks like in practice, though, is careful. Giants general manager Joe Schoen has been direct about it: the goal right now is not to unleash Dart's aggressiveness, it is to shape it. There is a difference between a player who takes risks because the moment calls for it and one who takes them because nobody told him not to.

Schoen pointed to a preseason game against the New England Patriots as the kind of environment where pulling back matters more than pushing forward. More than that, the Giants are leaning on what they learned being around quarterbacks Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes — two players who figured out, at some point, when to pull the trigger and when to wait. The lesson isn't being handed down in a meeting room. It's being shown.

That is a real thing to do for a young quarterback. It means the organization sees something worth protecting, not just developing. The question now is what Dart does with the example in front of him.
