Waddle inherited a broken season and helped build something anyway

Bo Nix went down with a broken ankle, and a lot of teams would have gone with him. The Denver Broncos didn't.

Waddle came to Denver already knowing what it felt like to be the weapon a quarterback leans on. He had built that reputation across four seasons in Miami, running routes that made defensive coordinators stay late. When the Broncos picked him up, they were betting that a playmaker of his caliber could change what a team looks like, even when things get hard.

Things got hard. Their starting quarterback broke his ankle, a setback that would have derailed a roster built around one player. But Denver finished the regular season as the top seed in the AFC and won the AFC West.
