Quarterback · Cleveland Browns

Deshaun Watson

No. 4 · 10th season

All options open — which is another way of saying nothing is settled

The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback under contract who has barely played in two years, and now they have a rookie with a famous name and a lot of eyes on him. What they do not have, at least publicly, is a plan.

Deshaun Watson came to Cleveland in one of the most expensive trades in league history. The contract was historic. So was the time he missed — legal proceedings, a suspension, then injuries that kept him off the field for most of the last two seasons. The Browns built around a promise that still hasn't fully arrived.

This week, head coach Todd Monken said both Watson and Shedeur Sanders — the rookie the Browns selected — can play winning football. Team executive Andrew Berry added that all options remain open at the position. Those are careful words. In front offices, "all options open" rarely means everything is fine.

For Watson, that framing is worth sitting with. He is still on the roster, still owed a staggering amount of money, and still waiting to prove the Browns' bet on him was right. For Sanders, just arriving, the door is at least officially ajar.

Two quarterbacks, one job, and a front office that isn't tipping its hand. Whatever comes next, Cleveland is watching.
